He took care of the needy and the sick and adjusted legal disputes. He was not only a liberal patron of art and science, but was himself a scholar and an artist and the foremost educator of his day. In the history of art his significance is even higher than in political history or in legend.

The connection amongst Great Britain and Hanover was legitimized in two strategies by the Protestant succession. On the one hand, this legitimacy came from the dynastic connection involving the British royal residence and the family of Elector Sophie of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Sophie was the daughter of the English princess Elisabeth Stuart (1596–1662), whose father, James VI of Scotland (1566–1625), had ruled England from 1603 to 1625 as James I.

While North was a capable administrator, his government was at odds with the American colonists on the challenge of Britain’s try to levy taxes on them. In 1779, George III insisted that the war in the American colonies be prolonged, in order to stay clear of similar rebellions from breaking out elsewhere in the empire. When the British were defeated in 1781, North was forced to resign. Walpole would repay the Hanoverians by getting the acknowledgement of George II’s legitimacy as ruler from the top Tories of the kingdom.
